"Blow the trumpet in Zion; sanctify a fast; call a solemn assembly; gather the people." -- Joel 2: 15
Liturgy is "the source and the summit" of our lives as Christians. It is a means to encounter God’s Divine Presence. While our priests lead the liturgy, many members of our community serve as liturgical ministers, collaborating before and during the Mass to create a meaningful environment of worship for all. We carefully prepare Masses that encourage “full, conscious and active participation.” We also understand that some are more introspective, and we encourage participation in a way that is most meaningful and most comfortable for each individual.
Many who gather to worship with us allow themselves to be formed by it ... and go forth from it as a visible sign of the loving presence of God, not only to the people of our community, but for all the world. Liturgy is not simply a human creation. While it relies on human words and human actions--and objects made by human hands-- it was given to us by the Lord through the tradition of the church.
By virtue of baptism, each of us is called to minister to the needs of one another. We rely heavily on the dedication of hundreds of men, women, teens, and children who participate in liturgical ministries here at Christ King Parish.
Altar servers have special responsibilities and an important role. They assist the priest at Mass and are models for behavior for the rest of the congregation. They are part of a "holy" group which means they are "set aside" or “special.”
Who can become an altar server?
Training sessions are offered in the fall, usually in October and November for students in 5th grade or older. Because scheduling activities can be challenging, especially for youth, we require only one focused and intense training session with numerous date and time options. Refresher sessions may be offered later in the year, usually during the school day.
Eucharistic ministers are lay people (non-clergy) who assist the priest, being called upon to perform an extraordinary service: to minister the Body and Blood of Christ to the faithful. We gather on the day of the Resurrection to express our belief in eternal life--we listen to the Word of God--we give thanks and praise.
This celebration of the Eucharist is our most important activity. And this ministry allows you to be at the center of the life of the Church.
Who may become a minister of Holy Communion?
Anyone who is fully initiated as a member of the Church can serve. This means they must have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion. A short training program is offered for newcomers.
Those who serve should bring strong faith, a sense of awe, and an inclusiveness of others as the foundation for their ministry. They must be comfortable in sharing the body and blood of Christ with each communicant in what is most likely the most intimate moment of the liturgy.
We request that all ministers of Holy Communion show the greatest reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist by their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated bread and wine. Scheduling is done through an on-line system; requests to submit availability is sent out quarterly.
“Sing to the Lord, bless his name, declare his salvation day after day. Tell God's glory among the nations; among all peoples, God's marvelous deeds.” Psalm 96: 2-3
Readers, also called lectors, proclaim God's word to His people. As a reader, you make God present for our community during the Liturgy of the Word. You take on the duty–and the privilege–of bringing the printed word to life!
Who can become a lector?
We welcome any Christ King parishioner who is high school-age or older, who is comfortable with public speaking, and who loves and has knowledge of the scriptures (or wants to deepen their knowledge).
Individualized instruction is given to those interested in this special ministry, and preparation materials are provided.
“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God” -- Corinthians 5:20
As ambassadors of Christ and our parish, hospitality ministers (Parish Ambassadors) encourage a welcoming and hospitable reception to all we come in contact with. For each Mass, Parish Ambassadors welcome all who attend, and also take on the roles traditionally associated with ushers and hospitality ministers.
Liturgical environment ministers help create a meaningful and pleasant spiritual atmosphere inside the church. We invite parishioners of all ages and talents to join our team! Most of our work happens during the time leading up to the Advent/Christmas and the Lent/Easter seasons. Ministers are also called upon to assist with other special activities.
We believe that you will find the work rewarding. It's a great way to meet parishioners, and the best part is that we have a WONDERFUL time!
Schedules are sent to all interested members at the beginning of each of the two seasons — with information about the type work/help needed.
