  • Growing Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

    WE NEED MORE ASSISTANTS!

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a hands-on, Montessori based, method of formation for children that seeks to meet the development and spiritual needs of the children of our parish communities. The parishes of St. Bernard, Christ King, and St. Pius X parishes have been implementing CGS for the last 7 years. Within this time, about 150 children per year, have time to listen for the voice of the Good Shepherd, Jesus, in their lives every week. The children’s responses are filled with joy and discovery!

We are at the point in the development of our program where we need more adults to commit to supporting the work of CGS as catechists and assistant catechists.
Unlike other religious education programs, we do have to limit space in our prepared environments to effectively meet the individual needs of each child. To grow and provide more sessions each week, we especially require more assistants to support our lead catechists.

WHAT DOES AN ASSISTANT CATECHIST DO?
An assistant catechist is in the environment to offer support to the lead catechist and children. An assistant commits to a particular weekly Atrium session, comes a few minutes early, helps to prepare the Atrium environment with the necessary supplies, redirects children as necessary during the Atrium session, and stays a few minutes after to help tidy up the environment.

    WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

You would commit to a weekly, hour and a half Atrium session along with some prep time and clean up time before and after the session (around 2 hours total). We are especially in need of an assistant in Atria on Sunday morning (9:00-10:15am), Sunday afternoon (1:00-2:30pm), and Monday afternoon (4:15-5:45pm).

WHAT TRAINING OR EXPERIENCE DO I NEED?

The requirements are simple—you should like to work with children and be open to helping them listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd. Specific training on how to prepare the environment and positive discipline strategies will be provided. You also need to attend an Archdiocese Safe Environment course, have a background check completed, and sign the Archdiocese Ethical Code of Standards.

  • Reading Tutor Volunteer Opportunity (Seton Happy Readers)

If you enjoy working with children and are looking for a way to make a lasting difference in a child’s life, this could be the perfect volunteer opportunity. No experience necessary.

Volunteers share approximately two hours, one day per week, to help students enhance their reading skills. Each tutor works one-on-one with the same three students throughout the school year, so meaningful relationships can develop. It is a rewarding experience and a beautiful way to live our faith.

Beginning in September 2024, volunteer tutors are needed at the following Seton Schools:

    • St. Catherine (51st and Center St.)
    • St. Rafael (S. 32nd St. and Lincoln)
    • St. Margaret Mary (92nd and Capitol Drive)
    • Catholic East (N. Murray Ave. and E. Greenwich Ave.)
    • Northwest Catholic (N. 41st and Good Hope Rd.)

    • Our Lady Queen of Peace (2733 W. Euclid Ave.)
    • Mary Queen of Saints Catholic Academy (1227 S.116th St.)

Training, materials, and staff give volunteers the support they need to succeed. Questions? email Mary Beth Driscoll
