From the Office:

These first few days went well for both students and teachers.  I think that all were excited to begin a new school year.  Some parents had that happy smile on their face as they dropped off their children, as well.  Others had that concerned look as they were dropping off their little kindergarten child.  But, be assured, they were and will be in good care.

Thanks already to those parents who have begun to purchase their magazines from the QSP Fundraiser.  Continue to read the information and enter your orders on line.

Meetings:  Our parent meetings for students in grades 4 & 5 will be tonight, Wednesday, September 3rd at 6:30 in the homeroom of your child.  Parents of the Middle school will meet in the North Hall, as one big group on Thursday evening, September 4th, and then we will break up into specific grade levels, as different things need to be discussed at each grade level.  This meeting will also begin at 6:30 PM.

Picture Day:  Students in all grades will have their picture taken on Tuesday, September 9th.  We will start in the morning and the photographers will be back for the afternoon kindergarten class.  Students may be out of uniform today for the pictures.  This should be a dress-up day, not jeans, tees with pictures, etc.  The regular rule for school shoes will be in effect for the day.

Volunteer Hours:  Over the years, many of you have been volunteering and we would like to thank you for the time and the commitment you have so graciously given as either a chairperson or willing volunteer.  Parent participation is gradually shifting as students move from one grade level to another and new recruits are always needed.  In an effort to support the needs of our school, the school committee has put in place a minimum volunteer commitment of forty (40) hours per school year for each family at Christ King school.  Many of you, I know, will far exceed that number.

The Chairpersons of any school committee have already received a sign in form.  I am enclosing a personal form for you if you are doing an activity that you are doing on your own without a chairperson present.  At the end of  the quarter,  or when you have completed your hours, you may send the form in to the office to be recorded for credit.  This could apply to scouting, room parent work, coaching (but not your required gym duty).  Hours will  only be recorded once, so if you signed with a chair-person, he or she will turn in the form.   These forms will also be on the web under forms.

QSP & Gift Wrap Buyout:  I am just sending home a clarification to the $150.00 check that some of you handed in at the Open House.  If you are strictly doing a buy out, e-mail me and I will deposit your full check now.  If you are intending to sell one or both of the products, I will hold your check until the $100.00 profit is realized.  When the reports come to me and the amounts are recorded, I will either return the entire check, or deposit the check and write you a check for the amount of profit that you generated plus the extra $50.00.  For example, if you raised $75.00 profit, I would keep $25.00 of the amount.

The QSP is 40% profit of the total cost of the magazine.  The gift wrap is 50% profit.  However, I will probably not do any of this bookkeeping until probably the end of the first quarter for the first returns and, hopefully, toward the end of December for the second returns.  I will inform you of when the checks would be cashed before I do so.

If you did not turn in your check for $150.00, please send it to the office at any time to the attention of Sister Janet

Volunteering and being in Compliance with VIRTUS:  If you are planning to volunteer in the school and have not completed the VIRTUS (Safeguarding All of God's Children) program, please take care of that as soon as possible.  The guidelines have changed and you cannot volunteer before the requirements are met.  Directions were in the August 25th letter, or call the office for details.  We are not hosting a video session at Christ King at this time.

Chess Club:  Information will be coming out regarding a chess club after school on Tuesdays for the students in grades K5 through grade 5.  Read the information when it comes home and if your child is interested in playing chess on this day, the time is from 3:05 to 4:05.  You will contract directly with the company.  There will be six classes offered and then a repeat of another six classes.  Watch for the information.

Room Parent Meeting:  Just a reminder that the room parent meeting will be held of Monday, September 8th at 7:00 in the Parish Center Dining Room.

Parent/Student/Teacher Communication:  I thought that I would share this information with you.  Dr. Kathleen Cepelka, Associate Dean of the College of Education, and a former Principal, appeared on TMJ 4, on Tuesday, September 2nd at 9:00AM.  She discussed parent–teacher communication.  Some of her talk was walking the delicate line between "hovering" and "hands off" and talk about ways to address specific questions regarding how children behave personally and privately. Videos of recent features are available online at www.themorningblend.com

Morning Drop Off and After School Pickup:  We have changed a few procedures for these times and I would like to share this with you at this time.  Students in grades K4, K5, Grades 1, 4, & 5 enter and leave by way of the door by South Hall.  Grades 2, 3, and all of Middle school leave by way of the main school doors.  Therefore, we are asking the parents or whoever drops off or picks up the children to wave goodbye and to wait on the blacktop area after the yellow lines.  This will leave space for the students to line up in the morning and for teachers to keep their class with them until a parent is here to pick up the children after school.  If there are many adults on the yellow lines, especially by the south hall doors, it is difficult to enter and leave the building.  We want to especially be conscious of safety issues of pick-up after school for the little ones. We thank you in advance for your help in this matter.

“Respect Begins With Me” Tees:  We’re happy to see lots of orders for the “Respect Begins With Me” t-shirts. Hopefully, they will be ready for our first t-shirt day on Wednesday, September 24th. Two things you may want to be aware of when you are ordering - the shirt is the same design and color as last year’s and the sizes run very small.  To be on the safe side, please order a larger size than you normally would.  Orders are due no later than Friday, September 5th.  Thanks!

At Baptism, Jesus invited and equipped each of us to become His disciple.  Throughout the Gospels— especially the Gospel according to St. Luke—Jesus shows us what He asks and expects of His disciples.
