From the Office:

We are off to a good start in our school procedures and academic learning programs.  We have been blessed with cooler weather these last several days and that has really helped.  The playground is usually supervised beginning at 7:30, but not before.

Parent meetings were held the first weeks of school and I received positive feedback from all of the teachers.  The key this year is to work together in partnership to benefit the needs of all our students.  I feel that we are off to a great start.  Let's keep it up.  During the first weeks of school, I know that the teachers have been working on explaining our school mission statement and also talking about the student covenant in child friendly language for the particular levels.

Health Room:  Thanks to all of the parents who have volunteered to assist in the health room.  We are still in need of a few more volunteers for the program.  If you are interested, please contact either Judy Peck or Katie McNabb to see what is required.

New Health Room Volunteers:  Last week a manila envelope was sent to you in your child's backpack.  A DVD and instructions were included. Please view this material and call me when you have finished.  If anyone has a DVD that does not perform let me know and I will send you another copy.  Also, some information sheets were sent to one of you by mistake.  If you have them, could you please send them to Carol in the school office.  Thanks!  Judy Peck 414.774.7540

Chess Club:  Our Chess Mates group will start meeting again on Tuesday, September 16th.  On Monday, a form went home with all children in grades K5 through Grade 5.  Money and the registration form are due on Monday, September 15th at 8:00AM, as I need to inform the instructor of the number of student attending.

Storage Room:  Attention -- all Scout Leaders.  I am in need of two things.  First of all, I need a list of all scout, cub, tiger, leaders and assistant leaders as soon as possible.  I need to verify that they have completed the VIRTUS Training.  Secondly, the room off of the north hall stage needs to be cleaned out of all materials.  If you have anything in that storage room, please call Sister Janet immediately to set up a time to dispose or move and label all materials.  This all needs to be done by the end of September.  All materials remaining after that date will be permanently disposed of.  Thanks in advance for your attention to this matter.

Picture Proofs:  Picture Proofs were sent home with all students today.  Please pick your proof and send your choice and money back as soon as possible.

Generations of Faith:  Our first session of Generations of Faith will be held the weekend of September 13th & 14th.  If you have not registered for this yet, please contact the rectory to do so, or see the web site for information.

The Maggie Bersch Foundation:  For the month of September, we will have collection boxes/jars in each classroom for the “Maggie Bersch” Foundation at Children’s Hospital.  Any monetary donation would greatly be appreciated

A Note From Middle Level Literature Class – Mrs. Simko:  The 8th grade girls and boys, and the 6th grade girls and boys are in need of a book club leader.  Dads and Moms who would like to spend an hour with these intelligent young people, have a snack, and discuss a good book in a relaxed atmosphere are asked to contact Mrs. Simko for further information.  Please e-mail simkol@christkingparish

7th Grade Girls Book Club:  The book for the first quarter is “Twilight” by Stephanie Meyer.  We will meet Sunday, October 19th, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Wanted: Head Cashier Team for Clothing and Toy Resales:  I am looking for a team of 2 people to step-up Head Resale Cashiers.  This team would be in charge of taking inventory of supplies before the Friday night of the sale—usually the Wed/Thursday before the sale.  It takes about an hour.  Then, they would come around 4-4:30pm on the Friday nights of the Clothing and Toy resales to set-up the cashiering areas.  They would stay through the sale ‘til about 10:00 p.m.  During the sale, they would be in charge of the cashiering areas.  This year would be a mentoring year, but I am hoping to keep the team for 3-5 years.  It’s about 15 hours of volunteer time so you would be over a third of the way to your 40 hours!  Please let me know if you are interested.  Stephanie at stephutch@att.net or 262.797.7379.

Box Tops 4 Education:  Classroom contest - September 11th – October 17th.  Ice cream party to winners.  Important:  Target is having a promotion!  We can double all box tops purchased on Target items.  Please – anything you purchase at Target with box tops keep in a separate bag.  They are specially scanned so box tops can tell if they are from Target.  Any questions, please call Tami Benvenuto.

School News

Thanks To Smartboard Donors:  Thank you to the kind donors who made it possible for Christ King School to purchase its first Smartboard.  Funds for the interactive teaching technology came from grants provided by Robert W. Baird and Co., as well as Catholic Knights.   Additional funds came from the profits of Christ King’s Trivia Night and a generous donor who wished to remain anonymous.   The effort to bring Smartboard technology to Christ King School was led by the student newspaper, The Cavalier Chronicle, whose advisers submitted the grant applications.

The new Smartboard has been installed in CK’s computer room.  With that central location, the Smartboard can be shared by teachers at various grade levels to enhance a range of academic subjects.  Smartboards can be used to interact with a display screen, visit Web sites, and access databases directly from the board.  Efforts are underway to raise funds for the purchase of another Smartboard.  Please contact Sister Janet if you are interested in making a financial contribution so that Christ King School continues to keep current with educational technology.

Student Newspaper Receives Highest Rating:
Christ King School’s student newspaper has received the highest rating possible from the National Elementary Schools Press Association (NESPA).   The Cavalier Chronicle was ranked as “superior” after an in-depth analysis of several issues by a NESPA evaluator.

The Cavalier Chronicle is certainly one of the best elementary/middle school newspapers I’ve seen, and I have seen hundreds, said NESPA director Mark Levin.  He commended The Cavalier Chronicle for its strong writing and photography, its wide variety of content, a serious advice column, and detailed coverage of school and community issues.

The Cavalier Chronicle is produced by a team of about 30 middle-school students.  All middle school students are welcome to join the student newspaper and gain experience in journalistic writing, editing, desktop publishing and photography.  The first Cavalier Chronicle meeting of the school year will be held after school, Thursday, Sept. 25, in the computer room.
