From the Office

Advent:  The custom of the Advent wreath originated long before the birth of Christ in the pagan land in the far northern countries of Scandinavia.  Since the people of the land couldn't do outdoor farm work in the winter, they brought wheels from their wagons into their homes.

They decorated them with greens, put candles on them and then hung these wheels from the ceiling on a wire.  They would twirl the wheel to form a glowing prayer to the God of light in the winter darkness.  Later the Christians adapted this custom to celebrate the birth of Jesus who is the Light of the World.  A candle is lit for each of the four Sundays in Advent.

VIRTUS – Safeguarding All God’s Children:  Attached to this week’s Wireless is the second article for the 2008-2009 school year.  Upon completion of reading this article, please sign and return the half sheet of paper by Friday, December 12th.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception:  All students will attend liturgy on Monday, December 8th, the feast of the Immaculate Conception.  There will be no student liturgy on Friday next week.

Thanks for Giving:  There are many collections going on at this time.  The Boy Scout Troop 117 members are collecting gloves, mittens and scarves, the Marian Award Girls Scouts are collecting notions and clothing for the homeless teenagers in the city of Milwaukee, the Parish, along with school families are purchasing gifts for families at St. Catherine's School here in the city.  You may not be able to assist in each drive, but I encourage you to do whatever you are able to help those who are less fortunate than we may be.  Our theme for this quarter is that "Christ King Students make a difference in the community."  Wouldn't it be great for each child to earn some money by doing some service and then purchasing some needed items.

Student Council:  Action Metals – Student Council is part of an organization that helps recycle broken household objects.  During the month of December, we ask you to save your broken Christmas tree lights.  We will have a bin outside the office where you can drop them off.  Thank you for your support!

Christmas Poster Due:  Students who are interested in entering the contest for the Christmas Poster sponsored by the Knights of Columbus should have their posters in to the office by Wednesday, December 10th at 8:00AM.  Directions were sent home in an earlier wireless.

Fund Raising Update:  Included in this week’s  Wireless folders, some families will be receiving an update on their QSP and gift wrap fund raising.  If you have reached your goal of $100.00 in profit, or gave a buyout check of $150.00, you will not be receiving a letter.  All others will be receiving a letter.  Please review the form that I have sent and return it to my attention with a response from you as soon as possible.  If you have any questions, please call me.

Adult Points:  Any chairperson in charge of an event is asked to turn in your record of adult service hours periodically (at the end of each month or quarter).

School Registration:  Just in case you have a child who will be 4 or 5 on or before September 1st, and have not called the school to add his or her name on the school roster for next year, please do so as soon as possible as numbers are needed in planning my budget for next year.
