Religious Education: K3-8th

Religious education is offered for students in K3 through 8th grade and exists to support the role of parents in their responsibility for the Catholic formation of their children, a commitment made at Baptism. It usually runs from September to about May/June each year with registration beginning in mid July.
A nominal tuition fee is charged to cover the costs of the program, with tuition assistance available for those in need. We welcome registration or inquiries from families who may want or need to enroll sometime after the school year’s program has already started.
Our program is made possible by the generosity of many parishioners who donate their time each week as catechists (teachers) and volunteers.  Many say they get as much out of the program as the children do! Learn more about our catechists or let us know if you’d like to become one! Contact Maggie Pernice, our interim Director of Faith Formation at 414-258-2604 ex22 or by email if you are interested in learning more about how you can help or if you have any questions!
Our Program Encompasses Four Components:
As part of our Religious Education program, students in K3 through eighth grade are asked to attend EITHER the 8:00 or 10:30 Sunday morning Masses with their families. However, if a family wishes to sit with other members of the Religious Education community, on class weekends, we will reserve a block of pews at both of the morning Masses. (Note: This also fulfills our obligation as Catholics to attend Sunday mass.)
Classroom Formation
Classes for grades K3-8 (often referred to as “Sunday School") are held from 9:00 to 10:15 am on most Sundays following 8:00 Mass until 10:15 a.m.  Each week’s class includes discussion and activities focused on the Mass they just attended. Additionally, catechists (parishioners who volunteer to teach religious education,) provide instruction as recommended by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee’s curriculum.
Family Component
Seven times during the year, K3-8th Religious Education students, along with parents will engage in age-appropriate formation activities (formally known as Generations of Faith), pertaining to each sessions theme. This is an extension of the parish’s highly popular Between the Masses adult formation sessions that are held during the seasons of Advent and Lent.  We welcome and encourage any parishioner, regardless of having a child enrolled in religious education, to these sessions.  If you are interested, please download the Religious Education calendar.
Living Our Faith

We are called as disciples to intentionally engage with God and our community through service, pilgrimage, and prayer. Children will have chances to participate in mission-focused activities of our parish, including opportunities to do so with family members. More information will be distributed as we engage in these activities.

Sacraments: First Reconciliation and First Communion
As children reach the age of reason, generally around age seven, the Church extends to them an invitation to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. The initiation into the Christian community that took place at baptism is further extended by inviting children to enter fully into the heart of Christian faith through participation in the Eucharist.
First Communion (reception of the Eucharist for the first time) is celebrated in the spring of each year for the youth of our parish in the 2nd grade. Some of the sacrament’s preparatory activity is completed as part of classes attended by our religious education students and during school days for our school’s students.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation, also known as “Penance” or “Confession,” is an experience of God's unconditional forgiveness.  It is available to free baptized Catholics from sin and also challenges us to have the same kind of forgiveness for those who sin against us. It is offered for the first time to children who are at least in second grade and have been in our Religious Education program for one full year or who are enrolled in our school.

A Note About Athletics:
Students participating in our K3-8 Religious Education Program are invited to participate in the Athletics Program offered to students enrolled in Christ King School. Many enjoy the opportunity to join with fellow parishioners for our sports programs.
